Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Tough Enough To Wear Pink: $17 million raised since 2004

The rodeo season is coming to a close as professional cowboys and cowgirls compete for this year’s top titles with high hopes to walk away with a title at this year’s Wrangler National Final’s Rodeo. All along the way, they’re sporting pink to help raise money for Tough Enough to Wear Pink.

Purple Cowboy Wines is a proud supporter of Tough Enough to Wear Pink, an organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness and research. This year, Tough Enough to Wear Pink is celebrating its 10th anniversary!

How it all began…

Back in 2004, Wine Sisterhood founder and Purple Cowboy Boss Lady, Terry Wheatley, teamed up with Karl Stressman, former director of special events for Wrangler and now commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PCRA), and proposed a colorful dare to their toughest friends.

The dare: dress in pink and blaze across the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo arena in support of breast cancer awareness and research. That dare was met, and those cowboys and cowgirls tore up the arena dressed in pink!

Terry wanted to bring attention to the need for early detection and a cure for breast cancer, starting with that first Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day. She herself had breast cancer surgery; lost her grandmother to breast cancer, and both her mother and daughter have been affected by the disease.

This year, Tough Enough to Wear Pink is celebrating its 10th anniversary and $17 million raised since 2004!

Now a full-fledged national campaign, with sponsors like Wrangler, Tough Enough to Wear Pink provides a campaign and framework for rodeos and western events to help them promote breast cancer awareness and fundraising to benefit their local communities. Purple Cowboy is also the official wine of the PRCA!

Rodeos around the country designate Tough Enough to Wear Pink Days, encouraging patrons and rodeo participants to dress in pink to show their support for the cause. These Tough Enough Days pull in some serious support! Last year, the top fundraiser was the “Cowboys For Cancer Research” in Las Cruces, NM at a whopping $906,424!  (Check out all the top fundraisers here.)

Hauling For Hope II[1] The 7th Annual Tough Enough To Wear Pink Horse Show is gearing up for another amazing year!  During its existence, the show has raised $157,500! Funds raised have been donated to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Patient Assistance. Last year’s show was the best so far, raising $50,000, nearly one-third of the total money raised, to date. TETWP Golf Cart SignThe 2013 show is September 20-22 at Roberts Arena in Wilmington, Ohio. The horse show has many of the standard classes, along with a few special ones. Each year they have an “In Memories Class” and a “Survivors Class.”  The main goal is to have more participants in the “Survivors” class, in 2012 there were 17 riders that came through the gate!  There is still a large gap in numbers between these two classes, but they plan on having the show for many years to come!  Last year’s show saw a 10% increase in overall participants with 1650 riders – simply amazing! The dedicated folks at the horse show have had an amazing collection of items donated over the last six years to aid in their fundraising efforts. In the past, they’ve raffled such items as a pink manure spreader and a pink horse trailer! This year will be no different. In addition to another pink horse trailer, the group will be raffling a golf cart! Raffle tickets can be purchased throughout the year. The cost is $5 per ticket or five for $20. The drawing will be held at the show in September.  The first ticket drawn will be for the pink horse trailer and the second ticket drawn will be for the golf cart. Last year tickets were sold to people all across the country!  Anyone interested in purchasing raffle tickets may do so by visiting www.toughenoughtowearpinkhorseshow.com, or by emailing chip-jackson@sbcglobal.net or kaytracy7630@sbcglobal.net. Please leave your phone number and the wonderful TETWP Horse Show team will be happy to contact you!
