Lucky Cowboy New Year's Recipe!

Lucky Cowboy New Year’s Recipe!

Serving Black-Eyed Peas

Serving Black-Eyed Peas (some folks refer to them as cowpeas) on New Year’s Day is a Purple Cowboy tradition.  Yes, some folks believe they are lucky – we say…can’t hurt and they are tasty when a lot of bacon is included in the recipe!  And – they go well with a nice red wine like Purple Cowboy.

Here is our recipe ….notice is includes a POUND of bacon!

Ingredients:  1 Pound Bacon; 1 Pound of dried black-eyed peas; 1 teaspoon of salt (I usually add more); and lots and lots of water.

Cut bacon into small pieces and fry in dutch oven or similar pot.  While bacon is frying, clean black-eyed peas and let drain well.  Once the bacon is brown, add black-eyes to the pot…stir well and coat with grease (yikes).  Stir them around for a minute or so and add cold water from tap until peas are covered – keeping water level about an inch above the peas…You can always add more water later .  Put the pot back on the stove over medium high heat and stir the peas.  As soon as the ater starts boiling, turn down the head and maintain a light simmer.  Cook uncovered for at least an hour.  Stir often to keep them from sticking.  Add water if needed.  Cook until peas are tender and the consistency you prefer.  Some folks serve over rice – we eat them plain in a bowl with hot sauce.

Purple Cowboy Wines Pour Into WNFR!

Purple Cowboy Wines Pour Into the WNFR!

The cowboys are coming to Las Vegas

The cowboys are coming to Las Vegas and Purple Cowboy wines are making sure there will be plenty of wine.  The 52nd Wrangler National Final Rodeo, the ten- day competition to crown the world’s rodeo champions, begins Thursday, December 2, 2010 at the Thomas & Mack Arena on the UNLV campus, Las Vegas, Nevada.

Purple Cowboy, the official wine of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association, will be popping corks and pouring wine at watering holes around town and all the best rodeo events.

Purple Cowboy’s newest wine, Trail Boss Cabernet Sauvignon, made its debut on Monday at the 3rd Annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala at the South Point Hotel & Casino.  This wine will be officially released in January 2011 but the legends of rodeo, including this year’s honoree, Larry Mahan, got a special sneak preview at this prestigious event benefiting the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.

On Friday, December 3, Wrangler and the PRCA will host the George Strait Invitational Golf Tournament at the Cascata Resort.  Purple Cowboy wines will be poured at this sold-out event.

Wednesday, December 8 is the 6th Annual Tough Enough To Wear Pink Night at the WNFR.  Purple Cowboy, official wine of TETWP, supports the western community’s fight against breast cancer and wants to remind attendees this evening to wear pink to show their support.  TETWP and rodeo committees across the U.S. and Canada have raised over 9 million dollars which goes to breast cancer research and supporting women and families facing breast cancer.

Purple Cowboy wines are proud to be poured at the 23rd Annual Pro Rodeo League of Women Lunch and Fashion Show, 11am to 2pm, in the South Point Grand Ballroom.  Proceeds benefit The Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund.  Tickets may be purchased at The South Point Box Office (702) 797-8055 or www.southpointcasino.com

Purple Cowboy is also pleased to announce the winners of the Gold Buckle Challenge sponsored by Purple Cowboy  wines, Tough Enough To Wear Pink and Pro Rodeo Live.  Kim and Mike Grashuis of Reno, Nevada entered the contest at www.purplecowboy.com and were selected in a random drawing.  They are devoted rodeo fans who have attended the WNFR every year, but did not expect to be able to attend this one.  Purple Cowboy is thrilled to send them.  The Gold Buckle Challenge sponsors have extended the winning through the end of the year.  To become eligible, visit www.purplecowboy.com and find out how you could win a weekly prize from the sponsors.

Not able to attend the WNFR in person?  Grab a glass of Purple Cowboy and go to ProRodeoLive.com, the radio and internet home of professional rodeo for live broadcasts of all the WNFR championship action December 2 – December 11, 2010.
